Remedial Massage is a system of manipulation techniques for the soft tissues of the body using the hands, elbows, or arms and is effective in the recovery of back and neck pain, injured muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is used for injury prevention and recovery, reduces aches and pains, increases joint mobility, relieves pain and restores movement. Unlike Sports Massage however, Remedial Massage is more associated with chronic conditions or the repair of accidents such as sprained ankles.
The techniques are very similar to those of Sports Massage - it is a deep tissue massage performed to optimise the body's return to health after injury, reduces stress, tension and helps to bring a sense of well being. By using deep tissue techniques scar tissue can be broken down, trigger points relieved and muscles are flushed out for optimum health, keeping them flexible, agile and healthy and less prone to injury. This type of massage should be viewed as a medical massage to help alleviate aches and pains, promote recovery from injury or posture based problems and is not a spa relaxing massage.
Friction movements can be used around the joints such as the ankle after sprains to help break down scar tissue which can restrict mobility in the surrounding tissues. Remedial Massage can be used in the management of conditions such as osteoarthritis. It helps to promote the production of synovial fluid surrounding the joints such as the knees, which lubricates, provides a source of nutrients to the cartilage, has a hydraulic function and circulates around joints collecting waste products and debris that can build up causing pain, and expels them into the lymphatics for expulsion out of the body. Exercise will help to strengthen the muscles that attach to the joint and can help take the strain off the joint itself. Regular massage can aid in both treatments by helping to keep the muscles healthy and lubricate the joint thereby hoping to give you increased movement and mobility and less pain, aiding to a better quality of life.
